Where to stay in Dresden for first time: 4 Safe areas

Finding where to stay in Dresden as a first-timer can be a headache. That’s why, in today’s article, I will help you to find safe places to stay in Dresden for first-time visitors.

I will share with you what I believe are the best and safe areas to stay in Dresden for first-timers and tourists, along with a helpful map and things to avoid. I’ll also share where I stayed in Dresden and recommend some of the best hotels for visitors with various budgets.

Dresden is a historic city located on the banks of the River Elbe, in the eastern part of Germany. It’s the capital city of the state of Saxony and has a rich cultural heritage, known for its stunning Baroque and Rococo architecture.

Dresden is famous for landmarks such as the Zwinger Palace, the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), the Semper Opera House, and the Dresden Castle. The city got hit hard with bombing during World War II, which resulted in significant destruction of its old town. However, extensive efforts have been made to rebuild and restore many of its iconic buildings.

Dresden now is a vibrant cultural and economic center, with a thriving arts scene, universities, and high-tech industries. It’s also known for its picturesque setting, with green spaces and parks dotting the cityscape.

Dresden is well-served by air and train. It has an international airport (Dresden Airport) and a main train station (Dresden Hauptbahnhof). Deutsche Bahn operates regular train services between Dresden and to major cities in Germany and Europe like Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Prague.

Is Dresden safe to visit?

Yes, Dresden is generally a safe destination to visit. The historic center, with its beautiful architecture and cultural attractions, is generally safe during day and night. However, as with any urban area, it’s wise to use common sense and take standard precautions to ensure a safe trip.

I recommend being aware of your surroundings and safeguarding your belongings against pickpocketing, especially in crowded places. Additionally, avoid leaving valuables in your car and refrain from walking alone in isolated areas after dark.

Where to stay in Dresden for the first time?

The best and safe areas to stay in Dresden for first-timers and tourists are Altstadt (Old Town), Neustadt (New Town), Blasewitz, and Loschwitz. Regardless of where you stay, it’s always a good idea to exercise basic safety precautions to have an enjoyable trip.

In general, Altstadt and Neustadt are the most popular bases for visitors, while Blasewitz and Loschwitz offer a more local residential atmosphere.

Altstadt (Old Town) is the best area for first-timers and those who want to stay right in the center of the action. This is the historic heart of Dresden and home to famous sights like the Frauenkirche, Zwinger Palace, and Semper Opera House. You can find some of the best hotels, restaurants, and shops here.

Neustadt, located across the river from the Altstadt, is a great choice if you prefer a more bohemian vibe and want to explore quirky shops and bustling markets. This area is known for its vibrant nightlife, trendy cafes, and artistic atmosphere. It is within walking distance, or a short train/tram ride to the old town.

If you prefer a quieter stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, consider Blasewitz and Loschwitz. These areas are also great locations for travelers with a car as many accommodations here provide free parking. The old town is easily readable by walking and taking public transportation.

During my trip to Dresden, I stayed at the mid-range NH Collection Dresden Altmarkt. It was centrally located on the Altmarkt Square in the heart of the Old Town. It had modern rooms, a lovely roof terrace, and very good breakfast. The Prager Straße tram stop and the Main Station are only 5-15 minutes walking distance away.
