Where to Stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Markets: 4 Best areas

Hi guys, on my website, I already wrote an article about staying in Strasbourg for first-timers (I will put the links to it at the end of this article). In today’s article, I will help you to find the best places to stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Markets.

I will provide you with a list of what I believe are the best areas to stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Markets, along with a helpful map. I’ll also share where I stayed in Strasbourg and recommend some of the best hotels in Strasbourg for Christmas Markets for all budgets.

Strasbourg is known as the Capital of Christmas and hosts one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in Europe. The Christmas markets in Strasbourg usually start from 24 November and end on 24 December, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The markets are spread throughout the city’s historic center, on famous squares and streets, including the Chrìstkìndelsmärik at Place Broglie, Place Kléber, Place de la Cathédrale, Place du Temple-Neuf, Place Gutenberg, Place Benjamin Zix, Place Saint-Thomas, Place du Château, and Rue Rohan.

You’ll find rows of wooden stalls decorated with twinkling lights, selling everything from handcrafted ornaments and gifts to local delicacies. One of the highlights is the Great Christmas Tree in Place Kléber, which is beautifully illuminated and adds to the magical ambiance of the markets.

The atmosphere is incredibly festive, with live music performances, carolers singing traditional songs, and the scent of roasted chestnuts and spices filling the air.

The markets offer a wide variety of delicious food and drinks to enjoy. You can try some regional specialties like bredele (traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies), mulled wine (vin chaud), and foie gras.

The Christmas markets are a great place to find unique gifts and souvenirs. You’ll find everything from handcrafted ornaments and textiles to local artisanal products.

December in Strasbourg can be quite cold, so make sure to dress warmly with layers and comfortable shoes for walking.

Remember to be respectful of the local culture and customs while visiting the Christmas markets. Keep in mind that it’s a busy time of year for locals as well, so be patient and courteous.

Strasbourg has its own international airport, the Strasbourg Airport, located about 10 km southwest of the city center. From the airport, you can take a shuttle, taxi, or public transportation to the city center.

The city is also well-connected by train to major cities in France and neighboring countries. The Strasbourg train station (Gare de Strasbourg) is centrally located and serves as a major hub. You can book tickets through the French national railway service, SNCF, or other European railway services.

Strasbourg’s Christmas markets are very popular, so it’s a good idea to plan your trip in advance. Book your accommodation early to secure the best options.

Where to stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Markets?

The best areas to stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Markets are Grand Île (Old Town), La Petite France, Neustadt, and Krutenau. These areas offer easy access to major christmas markets in the historic center on foot and public transportation.

Historic City Center (Grande Île) is the most popular base for the Christmas market. This area is right in the heart of the city and the locations of all Christmas Markets, including the famous Christkindelsmärik at Place Broglie. Staying here puts you within walking distance to many attractions and markets.

Petite France, known for its charming half-timbered houses and picturesque canals, is a lovely area to stay during the Christmas season. It’s close to the markets and offers a unique atmosphere.

Krutenau and Neustadt are just across the river from the historic center and offer a quieter atmosphere while still being within walking distance of the markets. Krutenau is closer to the Strasbourg University; Neustadt is closer to the European Quarter, home of the European Parliament and Parc de l’Orangerie.

During my trip to Strasbourg, I stayed at HANNONG Hotel & Wine Bar. It has a strategic location in the heart of the old town, where all the Christmas markets are held. It was easy to explore all the markets on foot. The Central Station is also within walking distance. The room was very clean and comfortable.
