Finding where to stay in Bordeaux as a first-time visitor can be overwhelming. That’s why, in today’s article, I will help you to find the safe places to stay in Bordeaux for first-time visitors.

I will share with you what I believe are the best and safest areas to stay in Bordeaux for first-timers and tourists, along with a helpful map and areas to avoid. I’ll also share where I stayed in Bordeaux and recommend some of the best hotels for various budgets.

Bordeaux is a port city on the Garonne River in the southwestern part of France. It is a popular tourist destination that is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and world-renowned wine.

The city boasts beautiful 18th-century architecture, and the historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux’s main square, is a prime example of the city’s architectural splendor.

Bordeaux offers a diverse culinary scene, with numerous traditional French bistros and innovative restaurants, featuring regional specialties such as duck, lamb, and of course, an abundance of exceptional wine.

Bordeaux is well-connected with an extensive public transportation system, including buses and trams. It also has a major train station, Gare Saint-Jean, connecting it to other cities in France and beyond.

Is Bordeaux safe to visit?

Yes, Bordeaux is generally a safe city to visit, even for solo travelers. But as with any travel destination, it’s recommended to take common-sense precautions.

You should be aware of your surroundings, safeguard your belongings to avoid pickpocketing, especially in touristy/ crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas at night.

Where to stay in Bordeaux for the first time?

The best and safe areas to stay in Bordeaux for first-timers and tourists are Downtown Bordeaux, Chartrons, Saint-Michel, Gare St Jean, Bordeaux-Lac, and Bastide. These areas provide a variety of accommodations for all budgets and needs.

Downtown Bordeaux, which includes Saint Pierre and Saint Paul districts, is the most popular area in Bordeaux for first-time visitors. It is the heart of the city filled with shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions such as Place de la Bourse and the famous water mirror, Le Miroir d’eau.

Chartron, located just north of downtown, is a trendy and picturesque neighborhood known for its antique shops, art galleries, and riverside charm. It’s a great area for those who enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere, local vibe, easy access to the old town and the famous Wine museum.

Saint-Michel and Gare St Jean are convenient locations if you want to stay close to the train station and easy access to the downtown by tram. The area around the train station is generally safe to stay, but as in any main station, just take extra alert and avoid walking alone at night.

If you travel with a car or are looking for budget-friendly accommodations, you can find some good value accommodations in Bastide (many offer free parking). This area is located on the right bank of the Garonne River, opposite the city center, offering more local atmosphere.

During my trip to Bordeaux, I stayed in the historic center area at the InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hotel. It was a perfect place to explore the city, close to everything, including major attractions, restaurants, and shops. My room was very well appointed and clean. Breakfast was lovely with many varieties of hot and cold dishes.
