Where to stay in Salzburg for families with kids: 4 Best areas

Hi guys, on my website, I already wrote an article about Salzburg for first-timers and for Christmas Markets (I will put the links to them at the end of this article). In today’s article, I will help you to find the best places to stay in Salzburg for families with kids.

I will share with you what I believe are the best areas to stay in Salzburg for families, along with a map. I’ll also share where I stayed in Salzburg and recommend some of the best family-friendly hotels for various budgets.

Salzburg, the fourth-largest city in Austria, is renowned for its stunning architecture, rich history, and breathtaking Alpine landscapes. It’s perhaps most famous as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music.

The city’s Old Town (Altstadt) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasting beautifully preserved Baroque buildings, narrow streets, picturesque squares, and famous attractions like Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Palace, and the Cathedral.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched atop a hill, offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding Alps. The city hosts the annual Salzburg Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious classical music festivals.

Is Salzburg a good place to visit with family?

Yes, Absolutely! Salzburg is a fantastic destination for families. Your family can explore historic sites like Mirabell Palace and Gardens, take a walk through the charming Old Town, visit family-friendly attractions like the Salzburg Zoo Hellbrunn, and Haus der Natur interactive science & natural history museum.

Salzburg is synonymous with music, and families can enjoy performances at the Mozarteum or attend the Salzburg Festival if visiting in the summer. The city often hosts family-friendly concerts and events.

Where to stay in Salzburg for families with kids?

The best areas to stay in Salzburg for families with kids include Old Town/Altstadt, Neustadt/ New Town, Elisabeth Vorstadt, and Maxglan. These neighborhoods provide a range of family-friendly accommodations and easy access to major attractions.

In general, the Old Town is the most popular base for families who want to stay in the historic heart of the city. Staying here puts you within easy walking distance to major attractions like Mozart’s birthplace, Cathedral, and Mirabell Palace. This area has plenty of family-friendly restaurants and shops.

Neustadt is also a convenient base for easy access to the main train station and the old town. This area is located on the right bank of the Salzach River, close to Mirabellgarten and Mirabell Palace.

Elisabeth Vorstadt and Maxglan are great bases for budget-friendly travelers and those who want a more local residential atmosphere. Elisabeth Vorstadt is close to the central station, while Maxglan is closer to the airport. They are a bit removed from the old town, but easily reachable on foot or by bus.

During my trip to Salzburg, I traveled with my partner and stayed at the mid-range Radisson Blu Hotel Altstadt. The hotel has a super central location, close to everything. My room was bright and airy with amazing views of the mountain. Breakfast was lovely with a generous selection of dishes.
