Hi guys, on my website, I already wrote articles about Mykonos for car-free travelers (I will put the link to it at the end of this article). In today’s article, I will help you to find the safe places to stay in Mykonos for first-time visitors.
I will share with you what I believe are the best and safest areas to stay in Mykonos for first-timers and tourists, along with a helpful map. I’ll also share where I stayed in Mykonos and recommend some of the best hotels for various budgets.
Mykonos is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea, part of the Cyclades archipelago. It is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and charming traditional architecture.
Mykonos Town, the capital of Mykonos, also known as Chora, is a picturesque and lively town with narrow winding streets, white-washed buildings, and colorful doors and shutters. The iconic windmills overlooking the town are a popular attraction.
Little Venice is a charming waterfront district in Mykonos Town known for its colorful houses with balconies hanging over the sea. It’s a popular spot to enjoy sunset views and dine in seaside restaurants.
Mykonos is famous for its beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters and golden sand. Some well-known beaches include Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, Ornos Beach, and Psarou Beach.
The island is also known for its vibrant nightlife, offering a variety of bars, clubs, and beach parties. The nightlife scene is particularly active during the summer months, attracting lots of visitors.
You can visit the uninhabited island of Delo, which is only a short boat ride from Mykonos. Delos is an important archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage site. It was a major religious and commercial center in ancient Greece, with well-preserved ruins.
Is Mykonos safe for tourists?
Mykonos, like most of Greece, is generally a safe place for visitors. But as in any popular tourist destination, petty theft like pickpocketing can occur, so be aware of your surroundings and pay close attention to your belongings, especially in a touristy spot.
Daytime is generally safe to walk around, but be more cautious at night, avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas at night, and stick to well-populated areas.
Where to stay in Mykonos for the first time?
The best and safe areas to stay in Mykonos for first-timers and tourists include Mykonos Town, Ornos Beach, Platis Gialos, Elia Beach, and Agios Stefanos. Common-sense safety practices, such as safeguarding your belongings, should be followed wherever you stay on the island.
Mykonos Town is the most popular choice for first-time visitors. It is the capital and main town of the island and is known for its lively atmosphere, with narrow streets, shops, restaurants, and bars. The town is home to the iconic windmills, Little Venice, and picturesque alleys.
However, if you prefer a quieter stay with easy beach access, areas like Ornos, Platis Gialos, Elia Beach, or Agios Stefanos might be more suitable.
Ornos, located just a short drive from Mykonos Town, is a family-friendly area with a beautiful beach, plenty of dining options, and a relaxed atmosphere. Easy access to Ag. Ioannis Diakoftis Beach nearby.
Platis Gialos is a well-developed tourist area with a long sandy beach and various water activities. There are also numerous restaurants and beach clubs, making it a convenient and safe choice for first-timers.
In Mykonos Town, I stayed at the Fresh Boutique Hotel. It was close to everything, a short walk to beaches, restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Easy to explore windy cobblestone streets, trademark windmills and the Paraportiani church. Room was compact but had all the facilities I needed. Breakfast was delicious.
