I will share with you what I believe are the best areas to stay in London for families, along with a map. I’ll also share where I stayed in London and recommend some of the best family-friendly hotels for various budgets.

London is the capital and largest city of the United Kingdom. It is home to iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the London Eye, and the Shard.

The city boasts numerous world-class cultural institutions, including the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.The River Thames flows through the heart of London, and many of the city’s famous landmarks are situated along its banks.

London has an extensive public transportation system, including the iconic red double-decker buses and the London Underground (Tube). Heathrow Airport, located to the west of the city, is one of the busiest airports in the world.

Despite being a bustling metropolis, London offers numerous parks and green spaces, such as Hyde Park, Regents Park, and Hampstead Heath.

London’s West End is famous for its theaters, hosting a variety of plays and musicals. The city has a vibrant music scene, with numerous concert venues and a rich history in the development of various music genres.

The best areas to stay in London for families with kids are West End/ Covent Garden, Mayfair, Westminster, South Kensington, King’s Cross, City of London, and South Bank. These are all safe central locations for families to book their accommodations and explore the city.

All of these areas are very well connected to the tube system, so don’t worry too much about the area to stay in, just pick one hotel that suits your family budget and preferences, then you’ll be good to go.

West End/ Covent Garden is one of the most recommended areas for families visiting London for the first time. This area is known for its super central location, and excellent connection to the tube, making it a popular base to explore the city. You’ll have easy access to theaters, museums, attractions, and shops. 

Mayfair/Marylebone is an upscale and elegant neighborhood, close to attractions like Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace. Westminster/St James’s is where you can find iconic landmarks like Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and Buckingham Palace.

South Kensington/Chelsea is home to upscale shops and numerous museums such as the Natural History Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum. King’s Cross is a convenient transportation hub.

The Southbank area along the River Thames is home to the iconic London Eye, SEA LIFE Aquarium, and the Tate Modern. It’s a vibrant area with plenty of family-friendly activities and dining options.

During my trip to London, I stayed at Page8, Page Hotels in central London. It had a prime location, easy access to the tube systems, and major attractions such as the Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, and The National Gallery. My room was spacious with a nice bathroom. Breakfast was good with many options.

1. West End/ Covent Garden

West End/ Covent Garden is one of the best areas in London for families to book their stay. They are vibrant and central areas in London, offering a mix of entertainment, shopping, and cultural experiences.

This area is a convenient base to visit other popular attractions such as the British Museum, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, and Leicester Square.

It is very well served by numerous tube stations such as Charing Cross, Covent Garden, and Temple stations, making it easy to reach iconic Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace.

The West End is renowned for its world-class theatres, showcasing a variety of plays and musicals. Families can enjoy attending a family-friendly show in the evening.

Covent Garden is a shopping haven with a mix of high-end and boutique stores. It’s a fantastic place to explore and shop for unique items.

The area boasts a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and pubs, catering to various tastes. From family-friendly eateries to upscale dining options, you’ll find something for everyone.

Best places to stay in London in West End with kids:

Luxury ($$$): The Savoy, 5-star family-friendly hotel, located in a prime location, a short walk/train ride from Covent Garden and the River Thame, and Knightsbridge. It has an indoor pool, free airport transfer, and wonderful Breakfast. The 2 bedroom suites are a great option for a family of 4. If you have more family members, you can ask for adjoining rooms.

Mid-range ($$): The Clermont London, Charing Cross, 4-star beautiful children-friendly hotel, located in central London, great base to explore the city on foot and by underground system. Just a short walk from Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Soho/Theatre District, and Charing Cross train station. The rooms are spacious, quiet, and clean, and the Deluxe Family Room can accommodate up to 4 adults.

Budget ($): The Z Hotel Covent Garden, a reasonable price hotel in the heart of London’s West End, a good base  for a short stay and for families on a budget. Easy access to restaurants, museums, galleries and boutique shops in Covent Garden and Chinatown. Close to several tube stations, and the Big Red Bus. Family rooms are compact and comfortable for a family of 3.

Mid-range ($$): The Chesterfield Mayfair, great 4-star kid-friendly hotel in an unbeatable location in central London, between Hyde Park and Green Park, close to the subway station, Berkeley Square,  Oxford Street, and Bond Street. The hotel welcomes children of all ages and Children 12 and above will be charged as adults. It has a 24-hour front desk, daily traditional afternoon tea, and excellent breakfast. 

Budget ($): Marylebone Inn, 3-star family-friendly traditional London townhouse located within walking distance from Regent’s Park, and numerous museums such as the Sherlock Holmes Museum, The British Museum, and The Cartoon Museum. 10 mins taxi ride to Paddington Station and Heathrow Express. Various restaurants in close proximity.

3. Westminster/ St James’s

Westminster and St James’s are great locations for families interested in immersing themselves in the history, enjoying iconic landmarks, and having easy access to cultural attractions and green spaces.
